FAUX PRODUCT REVIEW 44: DERMALOGICA ULTRACALMING KIT (& 60-MINUTE FACIAL)

I had spare change in my piggy bank so I decided to treat myself to a facial and waxing. Removing the industrial hair from my face has become a pain, I’m out of facial masks, and my skin has been a bit blah lately. So, I got the Lip, Chin & Side Wax ($26 and self-explanatory) and Dermalogica Skin Treatment ($57):

60-minute personalized treatment includes deep cleansing, exfoliation and intense hydration. Designed for all skin conditions including aging, acne and sensitive skin.

I’m so glad I got the wax because I had a few ingrown hairs that had to be removed and a few pimples that had to be extracted. Painful! Other than that, there were no pressing issues so the esthetician decided to use products from the UltraCalming Kit. Of course, she suggested I switch to this system as well.

This kit for sensitized skin contains products to help relieve itching, redness, and reactive skin flare-ups associated with sensitive and sensitized skin.Ultra calming Kit Includes:

UltraCalming Cleanser: Gentle cleansing cream (1.7 oz.)

UltraCalming Mist: Soothing, cooling spritz (1.7 oz.)

UltraCalming Serum Concentrate: Sensitized skin antidote (0.3 oz.)

Barrier Repair: Shielding, protective moisturizer (0.3 oz.)

This kit retails for 40 bucks and according to the esthetician, it can last up to 2 months. I still don’t know if I would be paying more than I usually pay for skincare but willing to give it a try… eventually.

The morning after my skin was a lot calmer, the inflamed areas were flat. I’ve already been scheduled for another facial and wax in a month. Looks like I’m going to have to forgo something to afford this luxury. Maybe I could drive for Uber for an hour. Forgo groceries for the boys (Husband and Little Brother), they can afford to shed a few pounds. Maybe I could teach twerking classes, a lot of you guys need the help. Anyway, shop UltraCalming here. Get $10 off at Ulta when you join Ulta’s Ultimate Rewards Program. If you are interested in 10 bucks off your facial, email me. For whatever reason, there is no link *shoulder shrug*

FAUX PRODUCT REVIEW 41: ALOE VERA TONER

I haven’t done a Faux Product Review in ages! How have you survived? Have you struggled to be beautiful? My apologies. So, why do you need facial toner? I don’t know, maybe to remove dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin, shrink pores, restore balance and protect and replenish skin? For whatever reason, I came across Mario Badescu’s Aloe Vera Toner and because I had money to blow (thanks to sister-in-law gifting me a Nordstrom gift card), I bought it!

Anyway, the description:

Mario Badescu’s mildest toner for the most sensitive, dry and delicate skin. Soothing aloe vera formula reduces irritation and redness while removing pore-clogging residue from skin’s surface.

So, I selected this toner over the others because it doesn’t appear to be harsh, has Aloe Vera in it (duh) and I fairly trust the brand (Read: Faux Product Review 31: Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray w? Aloe, Herb & Rosewater).

I had zero expectations. I didn’t think I would notice a difference but by morning, my skin was noticeably smoother. It will take a bit longer for me to determine if it is providing me with the results described but for 15 bucks, you’ll get a giant bottle of this toner and at the rate I’m going (squirting it on a cotton ball twice a day), I expect it to last at least 3 months. Oh and you don’t have to shop at Nordstrom for this toner, it’s also at Ulta. You’re welcome.

FAUX PRODUCT REVIEW 37: MELTED MATTE

Ashlee's new favorite lipstick "Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick" in Bend & Snap" (until she finds a new one).

Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Bend & Snap

$15 gift card from Little Brother + $10 gift card from Ulta = the purchasing of unnecessary beauty products such as Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick.

Too Faced’s innovative formula glides over lips like a gloss but dries to an ultra-matte opaque finish. Infused with a no-sting plumping filler, Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick ensures color always looks rich, full, and kissable – never dry, shriveled or cracked.

Although my lips don’t like matte, I do. Deal with it. As a result of my favorite color being pink (e.g. Pink Gumbeaux), I bought the above color. However, I thought it was mauve but it’s a nice bright pink. I may post a picture on Instagram, I guess you’ll have to follow me there to find out. You’ve got to earn my love! Anyway, the formula is liquid, light and has great coverage. All that is necessary is one swipe at the bottom of the lip and one at the top. I do retouch after lunch but it’s not always necessary. I remove with coconut oil and baby wipes. Due to matte sucking the life out of my lips by day, I do moisturize my lips at night.

Should you buy it? If you have 21 bucks (plus tax) to blow. Don’t ask me, I don’t know your pockets… For more, visit Ulta!

FAUX PRODUCT REVIEW 31: MARIO BADESCU FACIAL SPRAY WITH ALOE, HERB & ROSEWATER

I am totally obsessed with rosewater. I talked a little about it’s benefits here but over the last few weeks, I’ve kicked it up a notch. Per the esthetician (Read: Facial @ Ulta), I should use it as a toner more often. Since then, I use after each wash (morning and night), to set my face, to refresh midday but also to hydrate my hair. Of course, this resulted in me running out which is totally cool because I’m a badass that likes to live my life on the edge. I’ll just buy another one, right? So, I travel to Whole Foods Market and it’s sold out but I don’t panic. I then travel to my local organic grocery store and nothing! Then, they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted them to call me when it arrived.

Me: When will it arrive?

Them: Probably in two weeks.

Me: Girl, I can’t wait that long!

I still had a day or two of rosewater so I waited a couple of days and went back to Whole Foods Market and NOTHING! I needed a Plan B and no, it wasn’t me making it. I don’t have that type of time. I then traveled to Ulta to purchase Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb and Rosewater.

A refreshing, hydrating mist to use anywhere anytime. Simply formulated with fragrant herbal extracts and rosewater for a pleasant, pick me up for dehydrated, tight and uncomfortable skin. Spray your day and night creams for a boost of hydration or use it to set make-up or spray on dry hair throughout the day. Safe for all skin types. Gentle, non-irritating.

I really, really didn’t want to buy this. I had so much success with Heritage Rosewater and strongly believe it was because it included the essentials: rose and water. Aloe and Herb isn’t the problem but the other chemicals bothered me; especially, because I would also use this on my hair. But, I had no choice. This is one of the consequences of being so adventurous. In contrast, it’s super affordable. I bought the 4 oz. bottle for 7 bucks (to keep at home) and 2 oz. for 5 bucks (to keep in my purse), then got 3 bucks off as a result of my Ulta points which means I paid less than 10 bucks. FACIAL @ ULTA

tumblr_nmi7xwpvFj1qj4315o1_500

Yesterday, I scheduled a last minute appointment at Ulta for a facial. I’ve been wanting a facial for a while, figured they could squeeze me in, and knew I could find a coupon (which I did for 30% off). I selected the cheapest one:

Dermalogica MicroZone Express Skin Treatments

Maintain your best skin ever with the 20-minute session designed to solve your top skin concerns – a must in between full service.

GLOW – Flash exfoliates to reveal healthy, glowing skin.
REPAIR – Instantly reduces visible signs of aging skin.
CLEAR – Rapidly treats blackheads and breakouts.

I arrived 10 minutes early but my facial started 15 minutes late. I let it slide. Once inside the facial room or whatever it’s called, I completed a form regarding my skincare routine then we chatted about my answers. Of course, my skincare routine is nearly perfect.

I’m not exactly sure what she she used, what she did or how she did it. We were busy talking skincare, local politics and if she should relocate to Chicago with her boyfriend. Note: She totally should since her sister and cousin also want to relocate. And, she’ll likely make more money there.

Any way, the facial was super relaxing to say it was 20 minutes and 20 bucks. She did extract 3 blackheads, told me I should start toning (which I do but not consistently), that I exfoliate too often and should minimize it to 2 times a week which is probably why my skin was a bit dull, that I should use a face mask after each exfoliation (which I never knew) and that I should switch to a hard wax opposed to a soft wax (hard wax would do a better job at grabbing and removing my beard). I could see a difference immediately following. There was a glow, my face looked clearer and a shade lighter. This morning, it looked even better.

I’ll be seeing her in a month when we’ll work on specific issues such as the annoying blackheads and dark marks. For more information on their services, visit Ulta.

You’re welcome.
