The older I get, the more I want to live my truth. As a result, I dyed my hair midnight blue black. Enough blue to look like a badass but enough black to fit into societal constraints.
I opted to do this myself opposed to going to a salon because it’s cheaper (duh) and it’s quicker (double duh). Also, most stylist do not know how to care for Sisterlocks. Locs are not created equally.
So, I traveled to my local Sally Beauty Supply store to purchase Color Brilliance’s Master Colorist Series Permanent Creme Hair Color Midnight Blue Black by Ion. I’ve been using Ion for years. Usually to dye my hair jet black. Speaking of jet black, there was this small chance that my hair wouldn’t look “midnight blue black” since my hair is already dyed black. I wouldn’t be adding anything to strip, lift, bleach or pop and lock my hair. I didn’t want to damage my hair. As an alternative, one of the Sally Beauty Supply consultants recommended that I lower the number of my developer. The lower the number, the more likely it is for the hair color to show. The lowest number is 10 with the highest being 40. I was feeling a little cocky so I bought the 10.
Opposed to how I usually dye my hair (at the roots), I dyed my whole head. My ends are always lighter so I figured if it would be most visible there. After application, shampooing and rinsing, I ran to the mirror. I don’t see it. I don’t have the greatest lighting in my bathroom so I went outside, in the sun. I was confident it would show but…nope. Then I took a selfie with the flash and…nope. I spent the next 48 hours asking people if they could see just one strand of blue and the answer was a resounding no.
Then, I went swimming yesterday. My hair wanted some chemicals, where here it is jive turkey! After, my hair color looked
black. I’m not saying that this product is ineffective, it received a lot of good reviews. It’s likely because I used midnight blue black on already jet black hair. If my hair was brown or lighter, I’m sure I would’ve been successful. But I will try again. Maybe another brand or visit to the hair salon.
